Malaysia to send more help to East Timor
Friday, June 23, 2006 (Kuala Lumour):
Malaysia will send 250 additional police personnel to East Timor next week to bolster its peacekeeping force there.
"We will help in whatever way needed. We are tasked to bring back police enforcement in the capital of Dili and make it a safe ground," Inspector General of Police Mohamed Bakri Omar said on Thursday.
The personnel being sent are specialists in riot prevention and will add to the more than 300 already present in East Timor.
The country has been wracked by months of violence following a decision to sack around 600 disgruntled soldiers in March. At least 30 people have died in street battles. (AP)
